I was listening to an interview with Robert Kuttner, the author of Obama’s Challenge on 89.3 KPCC in Southern Cali tonight. Initially, I suspected more of the growing antagonistic rhetoric I’ve begun to hear about all of the hurdles this new administration will have to overcome.  Surprisingly, Kuttner is very optimistic and forward thinking in his projections about progress in the upcoming administration of President Barack Obama.  One thing I’ve admire about Obama is his passion for teaching and openness for council. I’m sure he will indeed surround himself with great minds to address our dire circumstances. Here’s a review of Kuttner’s Book:

Earlier today I stood in line to Vote (4 and 1/2hours) here in Atlanta.  Aside from tension from old Ladies attempting to cut long lines, I peeped a few people taking advantage of a very lucrative business opportunity.  The guy pictured above understood that early morning hours + huge aggravated crowds = a demand for Fresh Chicken Biscuits.  At 2 dollars a pop times at least 500.

Hip Hop historian, journalist, deejay and community activist Davey D interviews Texas Attorney KC about the importance of early voting. KC is the founder of Hip Hop Against Police Brutality.

On another note, I happened to be up late last night and got a chance to read Henry David Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience last night. During the mid 1800s, Thoreau was a strong opponent of Slavery and the Mexican War. Below, Thoreau visits his ideas about what voting truly means and its effectiveness.

All voting is a sort of gaming, like checkers or backgammon, with a slight moral tinge to it, a playing with right and wrong, with moral questions; and betting naturally accompanies it. The character of the voters is not staked. I cast my vote, perchance, as I think right; but I am not vitally concerned that that right should prevail. I am willing to leave it to the majority. Its obligation, therefore, never exceeds that of expediency. Even voting for the right is doingnothing for it. It is only expressing to men feebly your desire that it should prevail. A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority. There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men. When the majority shall at length vote for the abolition of slavery, it will be because they are indifferent to slavery, or because there is but little slavery left to be abolished by their vote. They will then be the only slaves. Only his vote can hasten the abolition of slavery who asserts his own freedom by his vote.
